The journey to become an electrician is not easy but it is not that hard too. It just that you need to know the steps and path so that you will be able to gain as much knowledge and skills as possible. Before you decide to become one, you should know the main tasks that are done by electricians. Most of the electricians work focus on either of these two things which are construction or maintenance. However, there are certain electricians that do both construction and maintenance. For electricians who are specializing in construction, their main task is to install wiring systems into factories, buildings and homes. For electricians that specialize in maintenance, their main tasks are fixing and upgrading existing electrical systems as well as repairing electrical equipments.
Well, what does an electrician apprentice really is? Among the first things that one should do before starting their electrician career journey, one need to enroll in any apprenticeship program. By doing so, one will be considered as electrician apprentice. For apprentice, they will start with doing the simplest work and placed under supervision from a fully-licensed electrician. This is done in order to ensure safety, efficiency and and success rate of the task. Other than that, the supervisor will also provide guidance as well as passing down experience to you.
Apprentice Electrician Training
The best part of apprenticeship is that you will earn while you are learning. Every task that you do will be paid by the client. The training style of the apprenticeship program is divided into two; on job training and classroom training. Well, sorry for you but still you can’t escape classroom. But, worry not since the classroom training is not as many as the on the site job training. You will be getting a lot of exposures and the apprenticeship will not focusing on theories only.
You can choose either to start their classroom before going for apprenticeship or you can do the classroom training and on site job training together. However, many people choose to do the classroom training first so that they can focus on the site training later. By doing so, you are actually increasing your chances of being given more advanced work during your apprenticeship.
The period for apprenticeship program is quite long as the training is comprehensive. You will need at least 4 years to complete the training. For each year of training, it includes 144 hours of classroom instructions and 2000 hours of on the job training. For on the job training, apprentice at first will be given task such as drilling holes, set anchors and attach conduit. After that, they will be given task such as measuring, fabricating, and many more. They will also learn how to set up and draw diagrams for entire electrical systems. After you have successfully complete your apprenticeship, you are qualified to work on either maintenance or construction work or both. With this completion also qualify you to sit for the full licensed electrician test.
